Christmas has arrived in Ms Moloney's class. We have a Toy Workshop where we have been busy working as elves. We also have a new boy in our class, Mario the elf. He has been up to lots of mischief, but he has also been reporting back to Santa every night. We hope we all stay on the "Nice List". We are busy practising our Christmas play and look forward to our performance Wednesday 19th December at 12pm.
This month we learned about winter. We loved talking about things that happen in winter, the days getting shorter and colder, sometimes it snows and the best bit of all, we get ready for Christmas.
We also learned about animals that like cold weather. We talked about polar bears and penguins and we made some penguins in art.
We had great fun learning about squares in maths.
As it is winter time, we have been chatting about how the weather gets colder and how we can keep warm. This led us to chat about what some animals do to winter to keep warm, they hibernate. After reading 'Hog the Hedge' we decided to make some hedgehog friends for Rocaí Rua to hibernate with.
After reading the story 'The Snowman' the boys tried their hand at making their own snowmen. We painted a background blue, then used cotton wool, card and felt to make the snowmen.
During lunchtime, some of the boys spotted that they could make sets using their jellies.
We learned all about our Families and homes in Aistear this month.
In the role play area we created a kitchen and took on different tasks - making dinner, setting the table, sweeping up and ironing.
After reading the story of the 'Three Little Pigs' we became builders and started designing and building houses. We also used the materials the three pigs used to make their houses.
We were busy washing dishes at the water table.
We sorted the furniture in the doll's house.
Also, we had great fun playing the Rooms of the House game.
November's Aistear Theme
My Family, My Home.
As part of Science Weeks the students in Junior Infants decided to do some experiments.
EXPERIMENT 1:LAVA LAMP
For this we needed oil, water, food colouring and alka seltzer. We learned that oil and water doesnt mix but putting alka seltzer into the mixture pushed bubbles of colours through the oil.
EXPERIMENT 2:RAIN CLOUD
We half filled a bowl with water, then put the shaving foam on top of it. This made it look like a child. We dropped some blue colouring onto the cloud and when it was full it fell to the water, in the same way rain would.
EXPERIMENT 3:DANCING RAISINS
We put some raisins into tap water and nothing happened, they stayed at the bottom. However, when we put raisins into soda water they started to dance.
EXPERIMENT 4: SKITTLE RAINBOW
We arranged some skittles in a circle on a plate. When we added hot water to the plate, magic happened, the skittles turned into a rainbow.
EXPERIMENT 5:RUBBER EGGS
When we passed around an egg if felt hard and cold to he touch. We put this egg into a container and poured in some vinegar. It was left soaking overnight and when we felt the egg the next day, it had turned to rubber.Science is amazing.
Ms Moloney’s Class did some scientific work this week too. We watched the effect hot water had on skittles.
We tried to study how water travels up through plants. Just like tree roots suck up water from the ground and take it to their leaves, we hoped to seee water travel through celery. We added blue food colouring to the water so we could see the changes. Unfortunately this experiment did not work for us.
