Extract from SMJB Plan for remote Learning
In response to this time of uncertainty regarding school closures, we have formulated this policy to outline how the school will maintain the link between school and home. In the event of another whole or partial school closure, we aim to continue to communicate with our pupils through various means.
We recognise that online safety is of huge importance and the aim of this document is to help to protect both school staff and pupils, while teaching and learning online.
This policy does not set out to replace our Mobile Phone or Acceptable Usage Policy. Rather, it is proposed as an important addition to the area of learning from a digital platform. The policy presented here should be read also in tandem with our school’s Code of Behaviour Policy and Anti-Bullying (including Cyber Bullying) Policy.
The primary obligation of all schools is to the welfare of the learners in their school. This policy, therefore, seeks to ensure that remote learning is safe for all student learners and that personal and sensitive data is also protected under GDPR legislation. Schools must ensure that learning takes place in an environment that is respectful and fair and meets its statutory duties.
This Policy has been formulated in accordance with the provisions of the Department of Education and relevant sections of:
(a) The Education Act (1998)
(b) Education (Welfare) Act (2000)
(c) Equal Status Act (2000)
(d) Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs Act (2004)
(e) Disability Act (2005)
(f) Children First Act (2017)
(g) GDPR
(h) Data Protection Act (2018)
(i) Department of Education: Child Protection Procedures for Primary schools
(j) NEWB Guidelines for Developing a Code of Behaviour (2008).
(k) DES Guidance on Continuity of Schooling for Primary Schools (May 2020)
(l) DES Guidance on Continuity of Schooling: Supporting Primary Pupils at very High Risk to Covid 19 (August 2020).
(m) DES Guidance on remote Learning in a Covid-19 Context; September – December 2020, for Primary Schools.
This is a working document. As we continue to explore options available to support distance learning, the document will be updated accordingly.
Context
Teaching and Learning is always evolving, especially, as we move deeper into the 21st century. Developments in IT provide us all with great opportunities as learners and teachers. Never before has there been greater scope to learn using technology and it continues to change the learning relationship between teachers and students. Advances in technology mean that assignments can be delivered remotely and that greater access to information on the internet affords the opportunities for real learning to take place under the watchful and professional guidance of the teacher. However, whether a child is being directed remotely or via a traditional classroom environment, it is very important that all partners are aware that once a learning exchange takes place between a student and teacher, whether at home or school, the same statutory rules apply i.e. the school’s Code of Positive Behaviour and all of the school’s policies apply.
We recognise that online collaboration is essential for distance learning and that families are in favour of increased opportunities to maintain the connection between school and home. St Mary’s JBNS uses a variety of child friendly, online tools, which assist in providing more effective teaching and learning, while also enabling greater communication between staff, families and students.
Guidelines for good online communication in National School:
1: School App (Aladdin Connect):
Staff will communicate regularly with parents and pupils via the school App. All families are asked to download the school app and to check it daily for updates and important information. Teachers will post work for pupils on the app.
Each teacher will be assigned a class e-mail address through which he/she will communicate with parents/guardians and vice-versa. Parental queries will be addressed during school hours only and should relate strictly to your child's teaching and learning.
2. Zoom / Teams
Zoom is a video-conferencing platform which will enable teachers, staff and pupils to connect via a live link. Teachers may connect with pupils using pre-arranged Zoom Meetings.
Rules for pupils using online communication methods:
For submitting learning:
Guidelines for parents and guardians:
For learning
Remote Teaching and Learning Protocols for Students:
- Anti- Bullying Policy
- Acceptable Use Policy
B. In the case of all other children who are instructed to self-isolate by their GP or HSE Public Health, educational provision will be provided as follows:
Summary:
→Do what you can, within your circumstances.
→There will be no school work set for planned school closures/holidays. There will be no interaction during these times.
→ Please keep abreast of postings on the school app– it is our main mode of communication going forward.
→We ask parents/guardians, students and teachers to ensure protocols are adhered to at all times.
→If you have yet to connect to any of the on-line platforms/school App, please do so. If you are experiencing difficulties, please email the school and we will assist you in any way that we can and please contact the school with any further queries you may have.
We thank the school community for adhering to the above guidelines for everyone’s safety and welfare.
This plan was ratified by the BOM NS at its meeting on:

Guidelines for good online communication in National School:
- Under no circumstances should pictures or recordings be taken of video calls.
- Staff, families and students are expected to behave in an appropriate, safe, respectful and kind manner online.
- It is the duty of parents/guardians to supervise children while they are working online and to ensure that any content submitted to their teacher is appropriate.
- Staff members will communicate with pupils and their families via Aladdin or School Email or through an established app.
- Any electronic forms of communication will be for educational purposes and to allow for communication with families.
- Students and staff will communicate using tools which have been approved by the school and of which parents have been notified (Aladdin, Zoom)
- Parental permission will be acquired before setting up a profile for a pupil on a communication forum.
- For video/Zoom calls, parental permission is implied, as the link to a video call will be communicated via the parent/guardian’s email address. Essentially, by virtue of the pupil logging on to the call, permission is assumed.
- For security reasons, passwords will be provided to families, where applicable.
- St Mary’s JBNS cannot accept responsibility for the security of online platforms, in the event that they are compromised.
- Submit work and pictures that are appropriate - have an adult take a look at your work before you send it.
- Use kind and friendly words.
- Remember to ensure you join each Zoom meeting using your family name.
- Pictures or recordings of the video call are not allowed.
- Remember our school rules - they are still in place, even online.
- Set up your device in a quiet space, with no distractions in the background.
- Join the video with your microphone muted.
- Raise your hand before speaking, just like you would do in class.
- If you have the chance to talk, speak in your normal voice, using kind and friendly words.
- Show respect by listening to others while they are speaking.
- Ensure that you are dressed appropriately for the video call.
- Be on time - set a reminder if it helps.
- Enjoy! Don’t forget to wave hello to everyone when you join!
Guidelines for parents and guardians:
For learning
- It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to ensure that pupils are supervised while they work online.
- Check over the work which pupils send to their teacher, ensuring it is appropriate.
- Continue to revise online safety measures with pupils.
- Under no circumstances should pictures or recordings be taken of video calls.
- Ensure that the school has the correct email address for inviting you to join apps and meetings.
- The main purpose of a video call is to engage in online learning activities while maintaining a social connection between the school staff and pupils. Encourage pupils to listen and enjoy the experience.
- Be aware that when participating in group video calls, you can be seen and heard unless you are muted or have disabled your camera.
- You will automatically enter a waiting room when the code for a Zoom call has been entered. Please note that school staff will only accept users into video call if you can be identified by the display name on your zoom account. (i.e. Family Name)
- Please ensure that your child is on time for a scheduled video, or they may be locked out. Please request to join the Zoom call approximately five minutes before the scheduled start time. This will give school staff time to verify your email address.
- Make sure to familiarise your child with the software in advance. For video in particular, show them how to mute/unmute and turn the camera on/off.
- Participants in the call should be dressed appropriately.
- An appropriate background/room should be chosen for the video call.
- For detailed information on GDPR and Zoom, please visit https://zoom.us/privacy

- Check-in on their child’s school work on a daily basis and talk to their child about the work being assigned
- The health and wellbeing of all is paramount. *Recommended Apps
In addition to a pared back plan of work for your child/children, we suggest the following Apps for your child’s use too, if you can access them. If not, do not worry, they are helpful but not essential.
- Scoilnet.ie https://www.scoilnet.ie/go-to-primary/
- Cúla 4: Excellent for younger pupils for Irish vocab – very child friendly. There are also videos of your children’s favourite cartoons here as Gaeilge which would be useful to watch occasionally to keep up with Irish
- Doulingo: most suitable from 2nd class upwards. Excellent app. Tests your child Irish ability level at the start and they work away at their own level for 10mins daily
- Mathduel: For tables. Fun and interactive
- Starfall: For spellings. Again, very child friendly and useful to keep spellings progressing without feeling like schoolwork
- Jolly Phonics App: to keep up phonics learning for infant classes
- Dolch words Apps: (there is a wide range available): for the development of sight words
- Nessy Apps: for reading for pupils with dyslexia or difficulties
- PinkFong: Digital stories for infant classes. Excellent and engaging
- Khan Academy: Useful for maths for older pupils especially
- Kahoot: for general knowledge and quizzes
- Toontastic: probably the best app ever for digital storytelling – pupils can devise their own digital story, picking a range of characters, settings, even musical background. They plan a beginning, middle and end to their story and can record their own voices to tell the story
- Puppetpals: similar to toontastic – useful for younger pupils. They can record themselves telling the story also
- Lightbot – Coding app – super for all ages.

- Advise staff and pupils that develop symptoms at school to bring this to the attention of the Principal promptly;
- Ensure that staff and pupils know the protocol for managing a suspected case of COVID-19 in school – Isolation area is located along main corridor and is clearly marked ‘Covid-19 Isolation Area’
- Everyone entering the school building needs to perform hand hygiene with a hand sanitiser;

Letter to Parents 10 August 2020
Monday 10th August 2020
Dear Parent / Guardian, Staff Member,
RE: Re-opening of St. Mary’s Junior Boys NS
I hope you and your families are keeping well.
As you are aware, our school has now been closed since 12th March due to the COVID-19 situation. We are now hoping to re-open our school safely, in line with current guidance and recommendations.
It is our intention to reopen to all pupils on Tuesday 1st September.
Re-opening the school safely will require the co-operation of all members of our School Community – BoM, School Leadership, Staff, Parents and Pupils. We will all be called on to play our part in ensuring that re-opening of the school is done in a safe manner which prevents the spread of the virus and allows the vital work of Teaching and Learning to proceed with as little disruption as possible.
We have been working on our plan for the safe reopening of the school for some weeks now and will publish same shortly on our school website.
We will publish the DES COVID-19 Response Plan for the safe and sustainable reopening of Primary and Special Schools on our school website. The Response Plan will give details of
• Physical preparation, signage, hand sanitiser stations,
• Advice, procedures and training for the safe return to working in the school for all school staff and pupils
• General and specific advice on how all pupils, staff, parents and visitors will prevent the spread of the virus
We will also publish our COVID-19 Policy Statement on the school website. Our BoM will keep you informed as to the progress of our re-opening plans and provide you with the information required by you to play your part in safely re-opening the school.
We are really looking forward to welcoming our children back to school and will be doing all that we can to ensure that the return to school is a safe and enjoyable experience for the children. We will be in touch with you again before school re-opens.
In order to keep up to date, can we ask you to make sure you have downloaded the Aladdin Connect app for our school.
Access codes will again be forwarded today to allow those not connected to access the app.
We will be using the app as the main method of communication as we prepare to reopen.
School payments can be made via the app, this will help minimise cash transactions on the opening days in line with Government guidance.

This is provisionally scheduled for Monday 31st august from 11am to 12:30 and is for first class pupils only. It is also subject to change depending on Government advice at the time.

Thanks to our Parents Association for all their hard work over the past year. Unfortunately, the Easter raffle was cancelled, but the Easter Eggs that were bought were donated to the local Garda Station who delivered them to many homes in the town.
New Books to help children's literacy have been purchased with funds raised by our PA, they will be put to good use over the next number of years.
Outdoor classroom/balcony
PA funds will also be used to convert our balcony into an outdoor classroom over the Summer. We look forward to adding this great facility to our school.

Dear parents and guardians,
Just a short note to wish you all well at this difficult time.
Thank you to all the students who have been doing their best to take part in some school work at home. We fully realise how difficult this can be.
We would encourage all pupils to continue to read, enjoy the school on TV from RTE, enjoy some online learning, get some exercise, and of course stay safe.
We will be back in touch with the pupils after the Easter break.
Remember if you have an urgent query, please email [email protected]
Wishing our school community well during the emergency period, have a Happy Easter,
Best Wishes,
John Gunnell and all at St. Mary's Junior Boys N.S.

31.3.20 .. Resources for early readers and reluctant readers
Oxford owls website for children who don’t have books readily available at home is a great source of free reading... https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/
It takes parents a few minutes to set up and I would recommend that the parents would choose an age level younger than their age especially at the beginning to get accustomed to it.
For reluctant readers,I would recommend that parents would read a book /part of a book to their children.
Re reading the same book can help children acquire book language.Inviting your child to show you where the reading starts on the page will encourage their participation.
After hearing the book a few times, the child could respond to the book by drawing their favourite part.
Labelling the things in the picture by saying the words slowly, stretching the word and writing what they hear would be a good idea.
Syllable work is another way these reluctant readers could build their skill set. Go on a syllable hunt-find 10 ,2 syllable words in your kitchen, garden etc.
Direction-ally is a problem for struggling readers -laying out items on a table-a potato, banana, apple, biscuit in a row...Parent says the sequence with the child -child repeats and points to each item.Repeat .Change the order ,say and point. Can be done with LEGO pieces, sweets, toys or anything in the house.Pointing and saying the sequence helps develop their attention to pointing at words in early reading. And it’s fun!

Covid Update 2
23.03.20
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Again, best wishes to all our pupils and their families during the emergency closure.
Here is our latest update.
During the last week we have managed to connect a large number of parents to our Aladdin connect app. This is the best way to keep in touch with all that is going on in our school. It is especially useful at this time as teachers can communicate directly with the families of pupils in their classes. The Homework module on the app is the best place to find the work that the teacher has sent for the pupils.
Please understand that this is a very difficult time for many people and be understanding in what we can expect from our families and our staff. Our teachers are doing their best to help your children in the full knowledge that school can not be replicated in a confined environment. A certain amount of homework will be set for the pupils, but hopefully not too much. I would encourage parents to set aside a certain time each day for school work, but please understand that we do not expect the pupils to be ‘at their desk’ for the entire school day. Please try out some of the many school resources available on line and look out for educational programmes on RTE and other sources.. see below..
RTE have announced that will be broadcasting daily ‘school' on TV to support families at home during the coronavirus outbreak.
The cross-platform initiative is being launched by RTE with the support of the Department of Education.
Daily school is set to begin on the station from Monday, March 30.
It will run from 11am to 12pm, Monday to Friday on RTÉ2, with a shorter "catch-up" segment later in the afternoon.
See this link to good online resources from the Irish times .. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/home-tuition-our-guide-to-the-best-teaching-and-learning-resources-online-1.4206766
Officially, schools are to close until 29th March, however most expect that date to be extended. If that date is extended, we will be in touch via Aladdin to make arrangements from early next week for other school books to be collected from the school. Collection times will be staggered so the minimum number of people are on the premises at the same time.
If you can not connect to the app or have an urgent query, please message me on 086 4137755 or email [email protected]

It has been a very busy first term in our school. Here are some of the highlights:
Ms Madden's Junior Infants have had such a busy first term settling into their new school. One of the main highlights this term was our Autumn Walk, where we collected items such as acorns, chestnuts and leaves. It really was active learning at its best. Aistear is proving to be very popular in our class. The boys particularly enjoy engaging in the role play area and really brought the Doctor's Surgery to life in our class. We are finishing up this term on a high by performing our Christmas play ' Ralph the Reindeer' for our families and friends. The boys have put in a lot of work learning songs and practising their lines for the play and it is sure to go down a treat.
Ms Moloney’s Junior Infants have had a fantastic first term in St Marys JBNS. Some highlights from our term;
Our Aistear themes included “The Doctor’s Surgery” & “My Family, My Home”. We had fun learning through play & developing Oral Language skills. We also enjoyed art lessons linked to our themes. For Science Week we teamed up with 1st Class for science experiments. We thoroughly enjoyed “Maths Week” games in the hall & Liam McCarthy’s visit to SMJB was a day to remember.
It has been a very busy term so far in Mr. O’Dwyer’s Senior Infants. In September we maximised our opportunity for getting out and about and enjoyed an Autumn nature walk around the church grounds. We learned a lot about the shape of various leaves and the different types of fruit and nuts that appear.
Coming up to the Halloween break we were exploring the theme of the home/ kitchen during our Aistear play sessions. This was a fun and tasty way to learn lots of new vocabulary and skills.
We furthered this learning experience with pumpkin carving and bun decorating before the midterm.
Despite the poor weather in the winter months, we made sure to keep active and enjoyed our PE sessions each week including two brilliant whole -school Active Days based around Orienteering and Athletics during October and November.
December was dedicated to preparing for our Christmas Show ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’ which we performed on our last week of our parents and friends.
This term in Mr. Prout’s senior infant room we have enjoyed many great activities. The boys have been working very hard in Literacy Lift Off, with the help of Miss Bradshaw and others. We were lucky to have been invited to watch plays in our school and at the convent school. We also look forward to doing our own play later in the school year. In the picture below we have the Green School committee members from our class, Sean and Andi. They are presenting Marcel with his prize for winning the colouring competition to promote awareness for the next green school topic, Travel. And Santa even came for a visit!
In first class we have had a busy few months which culminated in last week’s beautiful Christmas Mass. The boys put in a lot of hard work and can be really proud of their performance.
They have had active days, maths games and maths trails, Halloween costumes and had great fun playing snap apple and spider races. Art started as painting Autumn squirrels and moved onto winter polar bears.
We decorated our class Christmas tree and made Santa faces but the highlight for the boys was a recent visit from the main man himself. On the literacy front, we have started a new guided reading programme which the boys are really enjoying.
Please follow our first class blog on the school website and twitter which shows pictures of work and activities carried out throughout term 1. http://www.stmarysjuniorboysnenagh.com/first-class-blog
Ms Harrington's 1st class had a very busy term preparing for our Christmas Mass in the church. We learned lots of new songs and we really enjoyed the big performance last Wednesday.
We are really enjoying our new Reading programme 'Guided Reading' . We are reading 4 new books every week with Ms Harrington and Mrs Walshe. We are becoming fantastic readers. We have all agreed that we will continue to read some books over the holidays.
Santa also came to visit 1st Class during the week. We got a huge surprise!! Don't forget to leave him out some low fat milk boys!!
We have been learning all about Winter this month. We wrote some great Acrostic poems and made penguins too.
We are very excited for Christmas. We have been learning all about the Christmas story, Christmas traditions in other countries, doing lots of Christmas art and reading lots of Christmas books.
Have a great Christmas everyone!

The children made a Super Effort and coloured in a Green Schools colouring
competition!
We walked over to Nenagh library and heard a magical Christmas story!
The children are really looking forward to Santa! Santa’s Elf is in our classroom.
Buddy the Elf is either making a mess, having a party or sleeping in the quiet
room. Who knows where he will turn up next? We wish you all A Very Happy
Christmas!
Ms. McLoone’s Sonas ..Everybody has settled in really well in our Sonas class since September.
The boys have been busy this term with lots of different activities. Some of our favourite activities are playing with musical instruments, looking at story books, making jig-saws and listening to songs and rhymes. The boys loved taking part in the latest Active School Day and were very excited when Santa came to visit our classroom.
Christmas is a very exciting time!! .. especially in Ms. Galvins Language Class where we've been creating some lovely art work and have been busy writing out letters to Santa.
Elsewhere around the school, we are working to renew our Active School Flag. We had great fun for National Fitness Day in September & last month we focused on the Athletics strand. The boys have been doing “Active Homework” the night they have PE & we are grateful to parents for their continued support. Yoga starts for Senior Infants & 1st Class in January & we are looking forward to the upcoming “Active Days”.
Christmas mass
On December 11th our first classes and language class took part in the 10 o’clock mass in St. Mary of the Rosary Church.
It was lovely for our pupils to be part of such a special celebration along with their families, friends and members of the local community.
Green schools
Our new Green Schools Committee are hard at work as they strive to achieve our 4th flag for the theme travel. Well done to all the children who made decorations for the "Reduce, reuse and recycle decoration competition" run by Tipperary County Council.
