As part of our Food Theme we learnt about being a chef. In science we learnt about melting and cooling. We all became chefs for the day and melted some chocolate to make Rice Krispie squares. They cooled down and the chocolate got hard again while we were outside playing so we ate them after lunch. They were delicious! In November we planted some tulip bulbs. We needed small flower pots, compost and bulbs. Each boy filled his pot with compost, made a little hole and planted the tulip bulb. Then we covered it up with some more compost and put it on the shelf under our library to sleep for the winter. Hopefully our tulips will start to grow by the spring time. When we were learning the letter e we read the story Elmer the Elephant about an elephant who wasn't grey like all elephants usually are but lots of different colours. When we finished reading the story we coloured a picture of Elmer and then cut up different colour squares to stick on him.Our Elmers were lovely and multi-coloured when we finished them.He would have been proud.
In maths we are currently working on measures and today we were talking about tallest and smallest. After determining that Adam is the tallest boy in the class Ms Madden set the boys a challenge to see who could build the tallest tower. The boys had great fun building their towers and the winner was James who built the tallest tower in the class. For our science lesson during science week we investigated objects and determined whether they were hard or soft. After a class activity where we decided whether things were hard and soft we did a group activity based on this. We worked great in our teams and every team managed to sort the objects successfully. When we were finished we recorded our findings in our books. We had a busy week in class doing lots of experiments for Science Week. We were very excited to see what happened in each one. Here are some of the experiments we did. How water moves through capillary motionIn this experiment we used 3 glasses filled with different coloured water. We folded up 2 pieces of kitchen paper and connected the 3 glasses. It was interesting watching as the water moved through the kitchen paper making a rainbow effect. dancing raisinsFor our next experiment we needed two glasses, water, 7up and some raisins. We put water into one glass and 7up into the other, then dropped the raisins in. The raisin sank to the bottom in the water glass, while in the 7up glass we had great fun watching the raisin dancing around. Making a rain cloudWe filled a bowl with water then covered it with shaving foam. Using a dropper we put some blue coloured water into the cloud. When the cloud was full the blue water came through it just like rain. JelliesWe filled 4 containers with different liquid. One container had oil, one had water, one had vinegar and the last container had salt water. We put a jelly in each and watched what happened. When we examined the jellies the next day we noticed that the jellies in the water, saltwater and vinegar all changed while the one in oil stayed the same.
We did lots of experiments this week for Science Week. - Dancing raisins - Making a rain cloud - Floating and sinking - Skittles rainbow - Egg in vinegar We were very excited to see what happened in the different experiments. |
