November's Aistear Theme My Family, My Home.
As part of Science Weeks the students in Junior Infants decided to do some experiments. EXPERIMENT 1:LAVA LAMP For this we needed oil, water, food colouring and alka seltzer. We learned that oil and water doesnt mix but putting alka seltzer into the mixture pushed bubbles of colours through the oil. EXPERIMENT 2:RAIN CLOUD We half filled a bowl with water, then put the shaving foam on top of it. This made it look like a child. We dropped some blue colouring onto the cloud and when it was full it fell to the water, in the same way rain would. EXPERIMENT 3:DANCING RAISINS We put some raisins into tap water and nothing happened, they stayed at the bottom. However, when we put raisins into soda water they started to dance. EXPERIMENT 4: SKITTLE RAINBOW We arranged some skittles in a circle on a plate. When we added hot water to the plate, magic happened, the skittles turned into a rainbow. EXPERIMENT 5:RUBBER EGGS When we passed around an egg if felt hard and cold to he touch. We put this egg into a container and poured in some vinegar. It was left soaking overnight and when we felt the egg the next day, it had turned to rubber.Science is amazing.
Ms Moloney’s Class did some scientific work this week too. We watched the effect hot water had on skittles. We tried to study how water travels up through plants. Just like tree roots suck up water from the ground and take it to their leaves, we hoped to seee water travel through celery. We added blue food colouring to the water so we could see the changes. Unfortunately this experiment did not work for us. As part of Science Week two scientists from First Class, with the help of Ms Gavin showed us how to blow up a balloon using hot water and yeast. The boys in Junior Infants learned words such as yeast, inflate, steam and control. They can't wait for us to try some of our own experiments. |
