n Friday 23rd June our class went on a trip to the fire station. The firemen Dearan and Martin taught us all about fire safety in our homes. We should all have a smoke alarm on every floor of our houses and make sure to check them every week. We should charge our phones and iPads in the evenings and plug out the charger out at night. If we have a fire we must never hide - we should get out and stay out. They showed us a camera which helps them to see people because of their body heat. We got a tour of the station and sprayed water from the hose and we all got wet! It was great fun. Anthony the station officer came to take us for a drive in the fire engine. We loved sitting in the back with the sirens on! It was a great trip. We had great fun at our sports day. Our fantastic day was topped off by a visit from the ice cream van. The ice-cream cones went down a treat. We made some orange jelly in the classroom yesterday. It was so hot outside it needed to be put in the fridge for a whole day to set! Today we had a lovely treat of jelly and ice-cream after our break. It was delicious! In Junior Infants we started some new literacy stations for the month of June with Ms Walsh, Ms Gavin and Mr O Meara. We have been working on our sight words, letter sounds, letter names and letter formation. After a few mins we change tables and move onto a new activity. It is so much fun. On Thursday, 22nd June, we walked to the fire station. On arrival we were greeted by Dearan, the firefighter who gave us a talk about fire safety and what we should do in case of a fire. After this talk we all got a chance to try on the fire fighter's helmet. Next Firefighter Dearan showed us the fire engine and what the different things are used for. One of the most important things we learned was that if there is a fire it is very important that we do not hide from the firefighters. The firefighters showed us the special infra red machine they use to find people in the fire. We had great fun finding Bastian on the machine. Then the real fun began, we got to use the hoses and tried to wet Ms Madden. Firefighter John Paul took us for a spin in the fire engine with the sirens blaring. We really felt like real firefighters on their way to fight a fire. Firefighter Anthony stood on top of a fire engine to take a photo of us. He was very high up. The firefighters gave us a great tour of the fire-station. We learned a lot and had great fun. After lunch at the fire-station we headed back to school to tell Mrs Slattery all about it. As a special treat for working so hard Mrs Slattery said that the boys in Junior Infants could go to the playground. The boys walked in pairs and were careful to walk carefully paying extra attention when crossing the roads. Some boys were extra adventurous in the playground when they got to the playground especially on the climbing frames. |
